JSON and CSV: A Clean Export Checklist

Editorial review: 7 October 2026. This is a practical editorial guide, with primary sources where relevant; it does not claim a hands-on benchmark.

Decide what the receiving system expects

JSON represents objects, arrays and typed values; CSV represents rows of cells. Before conversion, decide the header names, row shape and whether nested values should remain serialized text. A valid file can still be wrong for the receiving application.

Make a short sample containing commas, quoted text, a line break and an empty field. Test the sample first. If a conversion works only on simple names, it may fail on the records that matter.

Inspect headers and row width

Headers should be unique and non-empty. Duplicate headers can silently overwrite values when mapped to an object. Each data row should have the same number of cells as the header; do not shift a missing cell into the next column.

Quoted CSV cells can contain commas and line breaks. Doubled quotes represent a quote inside a quoted cell. Splitting each line on commas is not a sufficient parser for such input. Wrowo’s parser handles these quoted cases and reports inconsistent widths.

Protect spreadsheet exports

Spreadsheet applications may interpret cells beginning with formula characters as formulas. When exporting untrusted text, keep the protection option enabled and inspect the output before opening it. Prefix protection changes the cell representation deliberately.

Protection is not a universal security certification for every spreadsheet application or import configuration. Treat externally supplied files carefully and use the receiving application’s safe import options.

Verify a round trip

Compare the number of records, header order and selected values after conversion. CSV-to-JSON commonly produces strings, so a number or boolean may require an explicit schema in the receiving system. Nested JSON may be exported as serialized cell text.

Try CSV to JSON, JSON to CSV and JSON Formatter. Keep the original file and document any intentional transformations.
